Safe Classrooms

Student and Faculty Responsibilities

Students and faculty will be expected to carry out a few basic tasks to ensure everyone’s safety in the classroom.

For Students

  • Each student must wipe down their seat, desk and tools before and after class.
  • Students not wearing a mask will be provided a disposable one in the classroom.
  • Students should approach the instructor one at a time.
  • No eating or drinking will be allowed during class. (Water bottles will be permitted in certain classes involving physical activity, and breaks will be provided for refreshment as necessary.)
  • At the end of the class period, all occupants must exit the classroom.
  • Students may not use empty classrooms as study space between classes.
  • Maximum room occupancies will be strictly enforced

For Faculty

  • All faculty will be trained in Safe Classrooms protocols.
  • Faculty are responsible for enforcing classroom safety. Students who do not abide by the Safety Agreement will be asked to leave. Faculty should report the violation to Student Judicial Affairs.
  • Faculty should wipe down their work area before and after class.
  • Plexiglass barriers will be available in all classrooms to provide extra protection between instructors and students.
  • Masks must be worn by all occupants during the entire class period. Instructors must wear masks or face shields with a drape.
  • Social distance should be maintained whenever feasible. Social distancing requirements are based on Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidance and are subject to change.

Faculty/Student Interaction

  • Academic departments will supply each instructor with classroom supplies, such as markers and dry erasers. Supplies should not be left in class after use.
  • If pedagogy requires students to write on the board, markers and erasers should be wiped down after each use. Alternatively, students may bring their own writing tools or request a clean marker.
  • Group work and other teaching/learning scenarios requiring close contact between students and instructors should be limited to the time spent to complete the task.
