Jesse's photo

Jesse Hernandez, M.S.

Counselor

Jesse Hernandez was a first-generation college student and the first in his family to earn a college degree. He is honored to say that he is a product of a community college, and his life has undoubtedly changed for the better as a result. Growing up in a poverty-stricken community, pursuing higher education was an obstacle for him. Ever since he was young, his parents instilled in him the importance of education. He knew he had to pursue higher education to provide a better life for himself and his family. Like many first-generation students, it was difficult for him to navigate higher education on his own.

As a work-study student at East Los Angeles College, Jesse’s passion for empowering students and helping them achieve their goals developed while working at the Transfer Center. Immediately, he knew that he wanted to become a Counselor and work at a community college. He transferred to Cal State LA and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2018. He then earned a Master of Science in Counseling and Student Services at the California State University of Northridge in 2020. Jesse now feels blessed to be in a position where he can inspire and impact others' lives. He feels that he is obligated to serve the community college sector that provided this same opportunity for him. As a Counselor and student affairs professional, he continues to advocate for student success, equity, inclusion, and access to higher education.  Jesse is also currently working as a Counselor at El Camino College, Victor Valley College, and Barstow Community College.

Joan approaches counseling from a student-centered perspective, creating a space where students feel heard, supported, and encouraged. Denise's photo

Denise Martinez, LCSW

Counselor

Denise began her college education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, where she developed a strong foundation in creativity, professionalism, and collaboration, and benefited from inspiring professors, meaningful experiences, and lasting friendships. While completing her studies, she worked at Nordstrom and secured a sought-after position, placing her on a path toward becoming a buyer. However, over time, she realized her passion and sense of purpose were shifting.

During a period of career exploration, she volunteered with a nonprofit organization supporting individuals living with HIV and AIDS. This transformative experience sparked a deep commitment to service and led her to discover her calling in counseling and social work. Motivated by this work, she returned to school as a nontraditional student at West Valley Community College, where she also served as a Peer Advisor in the EOPS program. The guidance and encouragement she received from EOPS Counselors played a pivotal role in her journey.

Denise later transferred to UCLA, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and continued her work supporting students as a Peer Advisor in the Academic Advancement Program. She went on to complete her Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) at UCLA. Shortly after graduating, she began her Counseling career at Santa Monica College in 1999 as a Pico Partnership Counselor. In 2006, she joined the SMC Scholars Program, where she continues to work today.

As a Counselor, Denise is committed to creating a supportive and empowering environment for students. She sees her role as listening with intention, offering guidance, and encouraging students as they pursue their academic and personal goals. It is a privilege to work alongside dedicated colleagues and inspiring students, and she remains deeply grateful to be part of the Scholars Program at Santa Monica College.
