As of Fall 2023, it enrolls over 24,000 students and is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Minority-Serving Institution, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. The university offers more than 140 degree programs across nine colleges, including the nation's first Charter College of Education and a renowned forensic science program. Cal State LA is also home to the Early Entrance Program, which allows gifted students as young as 12 to attend college. Notably, it ranks number one in the U.S. for the upward mobility of its students.
