Internships and Research Opportunities

In today's competitive economy, internships are crucial in helping you get a job once you graduate.

Benefits

Besides getting a foot in the door with a potential employer and looking good on a résumé, internships have other advantages:

  • The opportunity to "test drive" a career

  • Gaining a "real world" perspective on an occupation
  • Chances to network

  • Establishing relationships with mentors

  • Possible college credit or certification

  • An introduction to the field's culture and etiquette
  • Accumulating new skills

Internship and Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS)

NCAS gives community college STEM students an authentic NASA experience and encourages them to finish a 2-year degree or transfer to a 4-year university to pursue a NASA-related field or career.

Hispanics Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)

Join the more than 10,000 program alumni who have benefited from the exposure to industry, professional development, and mentoring and networking opportunities.

For more info, please visit the HACU Website.

Transfer to Excellence

The TTE Summer Research Program provides research experience for undergraduates (REU) who are enrolled in community colleges.

For more info, please visit the Transfer to Excellence Website

NASA Internship Opportunities

NASA Internships are educational hands-on opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as educators. These internships integrate participants with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related, real-time world task completion.

For more info, please visit the NASA Website.

SMC Career Center

The Internship Program is available to continuing SMC students. A continuing student is one who has enrolled and completed a minimum of 6 units during the previous fall/spring semester.

For more info, please visit the SMC Internship Website

Jet Propulsion Laboratory

An internship at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a chance to do the impossible. Here, you won’t be going on coffee runs — unless that coffee needs to be harvested from the moon and you’re on the team that’s building the probe to do it.

For more info, please visit the JPL Website.

Pathways to Science

IBP has connected underrepresented students with STEM funding and research opportunities, and has provided faculty and administrators with tools and resources to help promote the positive factors that keep underrepresented students on the STEM pathway into successful STEM careers.
