On-Campus Student Employment

At Santa Monica College, students have the opportunity to earn money while working on campus. From the SMC Bookstore to the Fitness Center and from academic departments to the Admissions Office, students can take advantage of the flexibility and the experience they can gain from working on campus.

Currently, there are two types of student employment available at SMC and their requirements. To work as a student employee at Santa Monica College, you must be eligible to work in the United States and have a valid Social Security Card or Employment Authorization Card (EAD) with the correct spelling of your full name. If offered an on-campus job, F-1 students should reach out to the International Education Center (IEC) and complete the process of requesting a social security letter to be submitted to the Social Security Office.

  • Federal Work-Study (FWS) - is awarded to students by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office based on a student's financial need, after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). DACA students as well as any students studying on a visa such as an F-1 visa, do not qualify for FWS. Contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office if you have any questions related to Federal Work-Study.
    • Must be awarded FWS to be able to apply for on-campus student positions earmarked as Federal Work-Study
    • Allowed to work a maximum of 10 hours per week
    • Students can work during the winter if currently enrolled in 3 units during the winter or enrolled in 6 units for fall and/or spring

    • FWS is not available during the summer semester

  • Student Help (SH) is open to any SMC student who meets the following enrollment requirements and is hired by a department with student help funds.
    • Allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and up to 30 hours during the winter and summer sessions
    • Must be enrolled in 12 or more units at SMC to work during the fall and/or spring semesters

    • To work during the summer, students must be enrolled in 12 units the previous spring semester at SMC  or if not enrolled in 12 units that spring semester, must be previously enrolled in at least 9 units during that spring semester and will enroll in at least 3 additional units during that summer session

    • To work during the winter, students must be enrolled in 12 units the previous fall semester at SMC as well as enrolled full-time in the upcoming spring semester; if not enrolled in 12 units that fall semester, students must be previously enrolled in at least 9 units during the fall semester and will enroll in at least 3 additional units during that winter session

*Student employees must complete the FERPA training, the Mandated Reporter and Student Leave forms and a new Student Employment Application contract annually, to be considered for rehire in any department.

How to Find an On-Campus Student Job

Through HireSMC, the Career Services Center lists many of the student job opportunities across campus.   You may also want to reach out to the different campus offices and departments, as they may have other methods of communicating available on-campus student jobs and/or have unadvertised student jobs.  For a list of SMC departments, visit the Department Directory.

HireSMC is a free searchable employer database, where employers seeking to hire SMC students can post available internships, volunteer and employment opportunities.

  1. Create a student account by clicking the "students" button on HireSMC
    • Your User ID is your SMC student email address. You must include your full SMC email address (including @student.smc.edu) then create a password.  However, if you created a student account prior to 7/18/2018 with your Student ID number, you may still use your Student ID # to access this site. If it is less than 7 digits, please add a "0" before your ID number to make it 7 digits.

  2. Select "Search - My School's Jobs"
  3. Under "View Jobs by Job Type," select "Student Employment"

  4. The jobs listed will indicate whether they are available for “Federal Work Study” or “Student Help” or both.

F-1 International Students and Working On-Campus

As an international student studying on an F-1 student visa, you may work part-time on campus under a Student Help position. F-1 International students are not eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS); therefore cannot apply for Federal Work-Study positions. You must be enrolled in at least 12 units (full-time status) and in good immigration standing.  F-1 international students enrolled in the Intensive English Program (IEP) are not eligible to work on campus.  Again, if offered an on-campus job, F-1 students should reach out to the International Education Center (IEC) and complete the process of requesting a social security letter to be submitted to the Social Security Office.
