Academic Senate

What is Santa Monica College Academic Senate?

The SMC's Academic Senate is an organization whose primary function is to make recommendations to the administration of the college and to the governing board with respect to academic and professional matters. The Academic Senate is the only organization that has a place in California Educational Law (Title V); its duties listed in the 10 + 1 Responsibilities.

The Academic Senate Executive Committee consists of elected officers and the chairs of standing Senate joint and sub-committees. The Executive Committee serves as a steering committee for the Senate by recommending senate objectives and setting the senate agendas, which are then discussed and voted upon by a quorum of the full Senate.

The Academic Senate and its Executive Committee meetings take place on alternating Tuesdays during the Fall and Spring semesters and are open to the public.
Note: Due to the efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, the Senate will conduct all business via Zoom for Fall 2021, or until further notice. The hyperlink to attend will be located in each meeting's agenda. Agendas will be posted the Friday prior to each meeting.
