Classroom removals

The classroom safety protocols constitute a direction given by the instructor. Any student who disobeys the instructor’s direction may be removed from the classroom according to SMC’s Student Code of Conduct. In the event a student refuses to follow safety protocols, including the mask policy, the instructor may have the student removed from class. If the student refuses to leave, please dial x4300 for assistance by Campus Police.

Canvas

Given the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, it is possible that a class would have to pivot online for a week or more of instruction—even for the rest of the term. Please be prepared for that contingency by using Canvas as your hub for student communication, course schedule, and content organization. While we hope that no class is called to pivot online, a strong Canvas shell assists even on-ground students with more effective participation in the content and assessments of the class.

Instructional Continuity

SMC will follow local public health trends and agency guidance throughout the fall term. We will monitor safety on campus and recognize that any positive tests in the classroom could lead to the pivoting of a class section online for any number of weeks. Each potential case will be handled individually according to the latest health and safety guidelines. While we do not expect any class to pivot online, everyone should be prepared for such an event.

Can instructors wear a face shield with a drape instead of a mask?

Yes, a faculty member can wear a face shield with a drape if they feel it provides a better teaching experience. If the faculty member feels they will be a more effective communicator, or that it helps with their instruction, faculty members can use the face shield with a drape rather than wearing a mask. In addition, if faculty have a medical condition which makes it difficult to wear a mask, the face shield with a drape is an appropriate alternative. A face shield with a drape will be provided for each faculty member and will be stored in the classroom.

What is the protocol if a student shows up without mask or wears a half-mask during class, or believes they don't need to wear one?

It looks like rosters of on-ground sections show whether a student has been vaccinated. What does this mean - one vaccination or two?

The roster indicates if they have been cleared, but not actual vaccination status. In other words, students granted an exemption are cleared. The system was not designed to reveal to faculty the exact status of the student. Overwhelmingly students are submitting proof of vaccination, not exemption requests.

What should an on-ground faculty member do about students who have been exempted from vaccination? Are the students allowed in class?

Will there be COVID-testing kiosk on Campus with free COVID testing?

Will masks be available at various locations (not classrooms) across Campus?

If a faculty member needs to pivot online because that faculty member either has tested positive or has been exposed, do they need to notify anyone (other than the Chair)?

Any pivot will need to happen with the approval of Academic Affairs and in coordination with the Health Center, etc. An instructor who tests positive should contact HR at COVID19HR@smc.edu and inform their department chair. If the instructor is informed of a positive test by a student, the instructor should contact their department chair and the Health Center at healthcenter@smc.edu.

Are any form of small group formations/discussions allowed in the classroom?

Can hard copy assignments, syllabi, etc. be handed out to or received from students in class?

Can office hours be in person?

May a student crash an on-ground class in person?

No. Students should email the instructor instead to request an add code. No student should enter a classroom unless enrolled in the given class. Signs posted near the door will aid instructors in reminding students of the policy against in-person crashing. Please note this policy applies even to students who say they are vaccinated; since it is not possible for an instructor to check the vaccination status of a student who is not the roster, all students must use email to contact an instructor for an add code.
