The University of California, Merced, established in 2005, is the newest campus in the UC system and the first American public research university to achieve carbon neutrality. Located in California's San Joaquin Valley, it serves over 9,100 students and is recognized for its commitment to sustainability, with every campus building LEED certified. UC Merced holds an R1 classification for very high research activity and offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs across its three schools: Engineering; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts. The university emphasizes accessibility and diversity, enrolling a high percentage of first-generation and underrepresented students, and is actively expanding its academic offerings, including a forthcoming medical school to address regional healthcare needs.
