AB 1705 Update-July 1, 2023

Based on AB 1705 regulations, community colleges cannot require students to repeat English or math courses that they have successfully completed with a C or higher in high school or college. You may be required to repeat a course if your certificate, degree, or transfer requirements deem the course necessary. If you believe you have been placed into a class that you previously passed and are eligible for an update of your placement results, please meet with an SMC Counselor to discuss your options.

Welcome to SMC Success and Engagement Center!

The purpose of The Success and Engagement Center is to assist new students with completing the Guided Self-Placement process for English, ESL and Math. We provide equitable access to information and resources regarding placement, eligibility, course waivers, and prerequisite challenge exams for new and returning students to ensure deeper educational engagement and efficiency in academic success.
