Accelerating Online CE Pathways@SMC

SMC received the Improving Online CTE Pathways (opens in new window) one-year grant to develop fully online credentials to help prepare students for the workforce. By the end of Spring 2020, SMC will have five fully online certificates in the Administration of Justice, U/X, Web Design, Interior Architectural Design, and Architecture. Additionally, SMC will offer fully online degrees for the first time!

Here’s a variety of ways SMC Faculty can get involved:

Online Teaching Winter Institute

• Faculty currently teaching online who want to improve their course & online teaching
• Faculty interested in teaching online for the first time

@ONE Course Reimbursement

Faculty who complete an @ONE online course (opens in new window)  between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, are eligible for reimbursement. We have funding for 70 @ONE classes.

Professional Learning Community: Teaching Online

All SMC faculty are now invited to PLC Online Teaching sessions. There will be events several times a month on Fridays and weekday evenings over Zoom covering various topics and Gerry Clark will be leading these sessions. Get Your Course Reviewed & Learn More about Teaching Online

SMC faculty are invited to participate in the Fall or Spring to get their online course reviewed by another faculty member and attend two events to learn more about online teaching and learning as a part of our Professional Learning Community.

Course Review Requirement

The course you are submitting for review should be from a Career Education program or IGETC, CSU GE or local SMC degrees requirements.

Requirements

• Get one of your online courses reviewed by another faculty member.. The course should be one you are currently teaching or a shell that you have ready for a future term.
• Have two meetings with your course reviewers
• Make the changes to your course based on the review in a Canvas sandbox and someone from the review team will validate them.
• Attend two Professional Learning Community events about online education (some will be on campus, some will have a Zoom option).
• Another option is to substitute one of the PLC events with taking an @ONE Class (the 10-10-10 class, Humanizing Online Teaching, Assessment or Equity & Culturally Responsive Teaching). You will need to pay for the @ONE class and get reimbursed (see info below).

Who will be doing the reviews?

There are seven faculty members who are trained in doing course reviews, the lead reviewer is Laura Manson and Shawn Jordison will be the accessibility reviewer. Reviewers will be using the OEI Course Design Rubric.

Does this affect my assignment or is it related to my formal evaluation?

No. This is a resource for you so that we can increase the quality of our online courses to better support students. Additionally, the review will only be seen by you and the review team.

Can I do this more than once or get more than one course reviewed?

Due to limited capacity, we can only offer to allow you to get one course reviewed maximum during the 2019-20 year.

What is the Time Commitment?

• The professional development will require group sessions that will occur on Fridays that will be from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and there will be some weekday evening options with Zoom video conferencing.
• You will have 2 meetings with your reviewers that are about 1 hour each
• We estimate that most faculty will need to spend 3-12 hours enhancing their course after the review
