Additional Campus Resources
IEC wants you to know you can always talk to us or use the other resources on campus. Here are a few we recommend:
Welcome to the Fall 2025 semester! We were excited to see so many of you at VIP Welcome Day last month and hope to see many of you at our Beach Day event on September 12th!
We realize this summer has been stressful for many of you as you tried to apply for your visas. We know some of you didn’t receive your visas in time, and that you’ll be studying on-line until next term. We will be planning online get-togethers for you so that you can meet new friends and become part of our community while you wait to travel. We hope you’ll join us!
As you start off strong at the beginning of the semester, we encourage you to introduce yourself to your professors and use the free tutoring centers early and often so that you finish the semester just as strong! Our counselors, our staff and our student Peer Mentors are all here to help you get the most out of your Santa Monica College experience. Please visit us in the IEC or e-mail us at IntlEd@smc.edu if you need help. We look forward to working with you this semester!

If this is your first semester at SMC, make sure you submit the check-in form within 10 days of arrival. If you have not done it yet, do it now by clicking on this Check-In-Form (opens in new window) . You will log into your International Student Portal and click on the 4th tab “Requests & Documents”. You will see the Check In Form under “What can we help you with?”
To maintain your visa status and keep your SEVIS record active, it is important to enroll in at least 12 units and to follow the on-ground requirement. The on-ground requirement states that only one fully online class can count toward the 12 unit requirement, and that at least 9 units must be completed on-ground.
The International Education Center (IEC) is required to have current information on F1 students. This includes address, phone number, and email address. If you have not provided the International Education Center with your current contact information, please update your information in Corsair Connect (opens in new window) . If you are unable to update your information in Corsair Connect, please contact the IEC for assistance.
Your International Student Portal (opens in new window) is where you will find important documents like your Admission Letter and I-20. This is also where you can make requests from the International Education Center. You can request Verification Letters, I-20 Travel Signatures, Transfer Out, and many other requests.
Do you need a letter to verify your status, fees, units or other requested verifications? Please submit a Verification Letter Request Form. You will log into your International Student Portal and click on the 4th tab “Requests & Documents”. You will see the Verification Letter Request Form, the I-20 Signature/Replacement Request Form, and other requests you can make under “What can we help you with?”
Please note that processing time may take as many as 8-10 BUSINESS DAYS. Business days do not include holidays, weekends, and other days the IEC is closed. This request must be completed by the student. Ensuring the information provided is accurate is YOUR responsibility. Errors may require another request to be submitted and a delay in processing.
It’s always important to exercise caution when dealing with housing transactions. We strongly advise that you do not send any cash or make any payments before physically seeing the accommodation and verifying its legitimacy.
Scammers may attempt to take advantage of international students by requesting advance
rent or security deposit payments without providing proper documentation or allowing
you to visit the property. To avoid falling victim to such scams, follow these guidelines:
1. Visit the property: Schedule a time to visit the accommodation in person. Take
a friend with you. This will allow you to inspect the premises, assess its condition,
and ensure it matches the description provided.
2. Ask for documentation: Request copies of any necessary paperwork, such as a lease agreement or rental contract. Read and understand the terms and conditions before making any payments.
3. Research the Landlord/Owner: Conduct a background check on the landlord or property owner. Search for their name online, verify their contact information, and consider checking reviews or testimonials from previous tenants.
4. Proof of Ownership: Ask for proof of ownership or authorization to rent the property. This could be in the form of a property title, deed, or other legally binding documentation.
5. Use Secure Payment Methods: When making any payments, use secure methods such as bank transfers, checks, or online platforms.
Before you start looking for housing, please remember that we do not recommend that you try to secure accommodations while you are still abroad or even outside the Los Angeles area. Because of the prevalence of on-line misrepresentation and fraud, you really do need to be here to personally inspect and approve your accommodations. Something may look perfect to you online but could be unacceptable in person. I do recommend that you start with a short-term Homestay (choose a company that allows one or two months’ stay); that will allow you to arrive secure in the knowledge that you have reserved accommodations. You will also know exactly what it will cost you. From that base, you can then look for something that might suit you better for the long term.
Unfortunately, SMC does not provide any student housing or airport pick-up, and finding suitable accommodations is the responsibility of each student. We do, however, have a lot of information to help you with your search! I would suggest you start by taking a look at SMC’s housing web pages (opens in new window) .
Since Santa Monica is an upscale urban area, there are many housing options around SMC. On the downside, apartment rentals tend to be a little more expensive in this immediate area.
Less expensive rentals may be found in West Los Angeles, Palms, Mar Vista, Westwood and Culver City – all within an easy commute of Santa Monica College.
Visit the Cashier’s Office page to learn how to request your METRO GoPass (opens in new window) (TAP Card) to be able to ride the public transportation. Your student benefits fee covers the cost to ride public transportation for the whole semester!
You can also request your Student ID Card (opens in new window) from the Cashier’s Office through the SMC website.
You can get more information by visiting How to Apply for Scholarships (opens in new window)

Mingalarpar! My name is Luna, and I am from Myanmar. I am an international student at Santa Monica College, pursuing Chemical Engineering with the goal of transferring to my dream universities: UCLA, UC Berkeley, and USC. My passion for science, especially Chemistry, began during my high school years while preparing for the IGCSE O’Level Examination. Since then, I have sought opportunities to deepen my knowledge and share it with others. At SMC, I have been a Chemistry Supplemental Leader, Math Tutor, and Co-President of the AGS Honor Society, as well as a Peer Mentor for international students. These roles have not only strengthened my academic skills but also taught me the value of leadership and community. Beyond academics, I enjoy reading novels and organizing detailed notes for my classes, because being organized is key to success! My first visit to the United States was during middle school for a summer camp, where I was the only student from my school branch to participate. That experience sparked my dream of pursuing higher education here, and SMC has given me countless opportunities to bring that dream closer to reality. I also love traveling and exploring new cultures. So far, I’ve visited Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Qatar, and several states across the U.S., each journey broadening my perspective and inspiring me to keep moving forward. My grandma would always tell me to not give up no matter what life throws at you. To be honest, I came to California to study all by myself. I of course cried my eyes out because I thought I would not see my family again for years. So, I stayed with a homestay. It wasn’t easy, but I made many friends whom I met during the beach day event by the International Education Center, who guided me through my journey. Now, my sister has joined me, so I’m no longer alone, and together we are preparing to transfer next year. Studying here has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, it made me grow, become independent, and truly believe in. So take that big step, don’t be scared, because what comes next will surprise you with how much you can grow, how many amazing people you’ll meet, and how strong you’ll become.

Welcome to Fall 2025!
Counselors are available to assist and guide you in your SMC academic journey. We are available to see students in-person and online via Zoom Express. You may also email us via AskIECC; this is an excellent resource for students who are unable to use Zoom, need forms, or who prefer a written response. Please visit our International Counseling (opens in new window) page to access our services.
Enrollment Tips and Strategies
Check class schedule - The schedule is dynamic with changes updated frequently.
Open Seat Notification List - If someone drops a section on this list, you will be notified but you need to move quickly, as all students on this list are also notified.
Wait lists (opens two weeks before the start of a term) - The Open Seat Notification (opens in new window) feature will turn into a wait list and students will have an actual number on this list.
“CRASH” – Email instructors to ask for permission to get into their section (use the campus directory (opens in new window) to find e-mails). The instructor will make a decision based on many factors, but it’s worth a try.
“Swap a Class” option (secure 12 units first) - By using this feature, you will not be dropped from the section you are using to swap as the system will first check to see if the section you want to add is still available. If you swap after the refund deadline, you will have to pay for the new class.
“Request a Class” - If enough students request the same section, the department may consider opening a new course.
Refund Deadline - Don't forget to make any changes to your schedule before the refund deadline to avoid losing money and having to pay again! Check your Corsair Connect to find the refund dates.
Attend our Transfer workshops: Don't miss out on our many university transfer workshops hosted by the Transfer Center (opens in new window) .
If you can't make any of our workshops, mark your calendars for our College Fair (opens in new window) on Thursday, October 9th, 2025, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the main campus fountain quad.
Connect with your Instructors: Don't be shy to ask questions or seek help from your instructors. They really care about how you're doing and want to support you throughout your journey. Building a good relationship with them can be helpful, especially if you ever face any problems or conflicts.
Tutoring Services: Need some extra help with your studies? No worries! We've got free tutoring services available at our Tutoring Center (opens in new window) for many different subjects. Making an appointment is easy!
Make New Friends: Building social connections is a great way to feel more at home. Join clubs and take part in organized activities to meet others who share your interests. Oh, and did you know we have an International Student Club (opens in new window) ? Come join us for board games, snacks, and new friendships!
