Connections International Students Newsletter

On behalf of the International Education Center, we would like to welcome all of our new and continuing international students to the Fall 2024 semester!  We wish you all a successful semester and a wonderful experience here in beautiful Santa Monica!

Now that the new school year has begun, we encourage you to take advantage of all the exciting opportunities that SMC has to offer. From holiday themed events to lively sports games, there are so many ways to enrich your experience here at SMC. One of the best ways to be involved is to join a club. To find the right club for you, check out the Clubs website, or visit the Associated Students in the Cayton Center above the cafeteria. Get involved in as many ways as you can!

We hope that this newsletter will help you stay connected to us. The International Education Center (IEC) counselors and staff are here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have. Feel free to come by and see us if there is anything that we can do to help you have a wonderful experience during your time at SMC. We appreciate all of you, and value the global perspective you bring to the college and to your classrooms.  Have a wonderful semester!

SEVIS Requirements – Maintaining your F1 Visa Status

If this is your first semester in the U.S. at SMC, make sure you submit the check-in form within 10 days of arrival. If you have not done it yet, do it now by logging in to your International Student Portal and clicking the “Requests & Documents” tab.

To maintain your visa status and keep your SEVIS record active, it is important to enroll in at least 12 units and to follow the on-ground requirement. The on-ground requirement states that most classes (at least 9 units) should be on-ground/hybrid and only one 3-unit fully online class can count toward the 12 unit requirement.

The International Education Center (IEC) is required to have current information on F1 students. This includes address, phone number, and email address. If you have not provided the International Education Center with your current contact information, please update your information in your Corsair Connect student profile.  If you are unable to update your information in Corsair Connect, please contact the IEC for assistance.

Housing Tips

It’s always important to exercise caution when dealing with housing transactions. We strongly advise that you do not send any cash or make any payments before physically seeing the accommodation and verifying its legitimacy.

Scammers may attempt to take advantage of international students by requesting advance rent or security deposit payments without providing proper documentation or allowing you to visit the property. To avoid falling victim to such scams, follow these guidelines:

  1. Visit the property: Schedule a time to visit the accommodation in person. Take a friend with you. This will allow you to inspect the premises, assess its condition, and ensure it matches the description provided.
  2. Ask for documentation: Request copies of any necessary paperwork, such as a lease agreement or rental contract. Read and understand the terms and conditions before making any payments.
  3. Research the Landlord/Owner: Conduct a background check on the landlord or property owner. Search for their name online, verify their contact information, and consider checking reviews or testimonials from previous tenants.
  4. Proof of Ownership: Ask for proof of ownership or authorization to rent the property. This could be in the form of a property title, deed, or other legally binding documentation.
  5. Use Secure Payment Methods: When making any payments, use secure methods such as bank transfers, checks, or online platforms.

We would suggest you start by taking a look at the SMC Housing Page.

Since Santa Monica is an upscale urban area, there are many housing options around SMC.  On the downside, apartment rentals tend to be a little more expensive in this immediate area.

Less expensive rentals may be found in West Los Angeles, Palms, Mar Vista, Westwood and Culver City – all within an easy commute of Santa Monica College

Meet our Peer Mentors!

Hey everyone! I’m Margaret from the Philippines, currently an international student at SMC pursuing Accounting. But when I’m not in class or at work, you’ll likely find me pursuing my hobbies. I’m an avid adventurer—I love hiking, diving and playing sports. I also love the thought of exploring and trying new things which is why I am here in LA. It’s been quite a crazy adventure getting here. Just a year ago, I made the big decision to transfer to SMC and start my studies over. During that time, I was about to enter my third year of college back home, just two years away from my Bachelor’s degree. But I felt a strong pull to study abroad. In fact, I told my parents about my plans the day before my visa interview! Crazy, right? Thankfully, they were super supportive. The adventure didn’t end there. On my way to LA, I had a layover in Japan, and my flight to LAX was delayed, leaving me stuck there for a day. I thought the universe was testing me. But hey, I made it here, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. If you’d asked the 5-year-old me where she’d be in 20 years, she would have said Disneyland, for sure! I always dreamed of visiting this place, but I never expected to be pursuing my dreams here in LA. There’s still a long way to go, but with the support of my family and friends, both back home and here at SMC, I know I’ll make it, even with some bumps along the way.

Message From International Counseling

Welcome to Fall 2024!

Counselors are available to assist and guide you in your SMC academic journey. We are available to see students in person and online via Zoom Express. You may also email us via AskIECC; this is an excellent resource for students who cannot use Zoom, need forms, or prefer a written response. Please visit our International Counseling page to access our services.

Enrollment Tips and Strategies

Check class schedule - The schedule is dynamic, with changes updated frequently.

Open Seat Notification List - If someone drops themselves from this section list, you will be notified, but you will need to move quickly, as all students on this list will also be notified.

Wait lists (opens two weeks before the start of a term) - The Open Seat Notification feature will turn into a wait list and students will have an actual number on this list.

“CRASH” – Email instructors to ask for permission to get into their section (use the campus directory to find e-mails). The instructor will decide based on many factors, but it is worth a try.

“Swap a Class” option (secure 12 units first) - By using this feature, you will not be dropped from the section you are using to swap, as the system will first check to see if the section you want to add is still available. If you swap after the refund deadline, you must pay for the new class.

“Request a Class” - If enough students request the same section, the department may consider opening a new course.

Refund Deadline - Don't forget to make any changes to your schedule before the refund deadline to avoid losing money and having to pay again! Check your Corsair Connect to find the refund dates.

Attend our Transfer workshops: The Transfer Center hosts many university transfer workshops. Visit the Workshops Page for more information about our upcoming events and registration details.

If you can't make any of our workshops, mark your calendars for our College Fair on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the main campus fountain quad.

Connect with your Instructors: Don't be shy to ask questions or seek help from your instructors. They really care about how you're doing and want to support you throughout your journey. Building a good relationship with them can be helpful, especially if you ever face any problems or conflicts.

Tutoring Services: Need some extra help with your studies? No worries! Free tutoring services are available at our Tutoring Center for many different subjects. Making an appointment is easy!

Make New Friends: Building social connections is a wonderful way to feel more at home. Join clubs and participate in organized activities to meet others who share your interests. Oh, and did you know we have an International Student Club? Join us for board games, snacks, and new friendships!

Are you interested in other clubs? Here is a list of clubs and activities we offer at SMC!

Mental Health Matters: We care about your mental well-being, too. Our Center of Wellness and Wellbeing offers free, confidential individual therapy sessions and referral services. Remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

We hope these tips and strategies help you settle in and maximize your time at our college. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you every step of the way!
