Hello everyone! I am so excited to be your A.S Director of Student Outreach for this year! My name is Melissa Martinez and this is currently my 3rd year at Santa Monica College. A bit about myself is that my major is Chicano Studies and I am aiming to go into the educational field specifically into teaching/counseling. I decided to study Chicano Studies to learn more about my community and learn more about my Mexican-American culture. My journey coming to SMC has been amazing from making amazing long friendships,to finding mentors as well as finding a community at school. As a first generation college student it has been a challenging transition and not knowing what to expect is pretty frightening. Having amazing people from The Adelante Program/Club,The Career Center,EOPs,Associated Students that have guided me as well as many others has made my experience at SMC an unforgettable one with so many wonderful memories. I chose to ran for last year's election because I know SMC is an amazing college with so many great resources students aren't aware of. I want to share the resources that have helped me in college as well as build new ones that the students need. As a former board of The Adelante Club I knew I wanted to keep on participating and make even more connections with people and mentors and challenged myself to run for Associated Students. Being in a club/organization has always been a passion of mine since I feel like I can bring new ideas and perspectives into the table. A little something about myself is that I really enjoy nature and love to hike and walk to different sites. A little something about myself is that I love collecting earrings and love to make my own sometimes. I'm so excited to get to know all of you and be able to connect more with all of you! So thrilled to be here and excited for what the future holds!"
